Questions
Frequently asked.
Your voice and your Torah
Will it sound like me?
That is the whole of the work. Every sentence is built from what you said and how you say it, and you review every chapter. A rav should be able to claim every word of his sefer.
Will you add Torah of your own?
No. A sefer carries only the sources you cited. If a chapter needs something more, we look for it in your other shiurim, and if it is not there, we ask you.
Who checks the sources?
We do, at the text itself, never from a summary or from memory. Anything we cannot locate comes to you as a question rather than being guessed or filled in.
What about questions of halacha?
They are never ours to decide. Anything that touches psak is marked for you, and stays as you rule.
Working together
How involved do I need to be?
As involved as you want. Some rabbanim mark every chapter; others read the finished manuscript and send a few notes. You review on your own private page, whenever suits you.
Who arranges the haskamos?
Haskamos are between a rav and his peers; we don't arrange them. We prepare the manuscript in the form a posek expects to review, and typeset the haskamos you receive as facsimiles of the letters.
Can the sefer go to a publisher?
Yes. The manuscript is yours, and can go to any publisher you choose, prepared to that publisher's own submission guidelines. Or it can go to print with us, through the Complete Sefer.
Who owns the sefer?
It is your Torah, and your name is on it. The rights and terms of every engagement are set out in writing before work begins.
Recordings and languages
What recordings can you work from?
Anything: YouTube, TorahAnytime, podcasts, Zoom, WhatsApp voice notes, and older cassettes and tapes, which are digitised first. A simple phone recording made at the back of a shiur works too.
Can you work in Hebrew and Yiddish?
Yes. We work from shiurim in English, Hebrew and Yiddish, translate between them, and set seforim right to left with proper nikud.
The Blind Reading
What is a Blind Reading?
A report on a manuscript you already have: whether it is sound, with every source checked at the text, and how it is likely to land, through a panel of seven readers. More about the reading.
Who are the readers?
Modelled readers, each built from what a particular kind of frum reader buys, loves and puts down: a mithazek, an avreich, a rebbe, a frum mother, a Bais Yaakov teacher, a publisher's reader and a browser in a seforim store. None of them is a real person. They show how your book is likely to be received; they are not a haskama and not a publisher's acceptance.
Will you rewrite my manuscript?
Not in the reading. The report tells you what we found and leaves the decisions to you. If you want the edit it calls for, that is a separate step, and only if you ask.
Cost
What does it cost?
Every archive and every manuscript is different, so we scope each one. Tell us what you have and we will send you a proposal. A sample chapter from one of your shiurim costs nothing.
